Historic Ted Smallwood Store

Historic Ted Smallwood Store Early in 2014, my husband and I drove to Everglades City to do some cycling. Along our path we stumbled upon Smallwood's Store, an incredibly preserved piece of history. The store, now a museum, is in Chokoloskee, and presents a wonderful array of artifacts, including many pictures, articles, and physical pieces from the history of the area. The store was founded by Ted Smallwood in 1906, as the need for goods in the isolated area increased due to settlement. When the store closed, almost all of the items for sale were preserved inside, and many of those items remain as part as the museums displays. While we were visiting, we were fortunate enough to meet and talk to a local author, who knew much of the legend surrounding native American Indians and conflicts with the locals including the store owner. Aside from the history, there's a beautiful view of the water from the back balcony!
